Alcoholism's casualty

An alcoholism diagnosis, once established, does not offer information about the type, cause and stage of the problem. Recent researches suggested that alcoholism is a complex physical-psychicological malady.
People from different social classes, having various profesions, are alcoholics.

The alcohol addiction is caused by psychosomatic, social and ideologically problems - a complexed interaction between several psychological and physical features, a specific enviroment and a specific attitude towards life.

However, alcohol addiction can develop, but it's not certain.

A person can slide from a conflictual situation into a disease, a suicide temptation, addiction or immoral acts. This can be triggered by several experiences and a specific behavior, a disturbed emotion analyze, a disagreement between will forces and topical desire to solve a tensed, unbearable relation and/or an adjusting capacity lack.

However, we cannot conclude that alcohol addiction is caused by decisive factors that push the person into an excessive alcohol consumption.

Alcohol addiction progress is determined by the individual character, emotions and behavior.

However, each alcoholic is responsible for his/her life, even if the enviroment had a major influence on the alcohol addiction onset and progress.

If the alcoholic does not start taking responsibility for what he became and for his addiction, and continues to consider himself the victim of the society and circumstances, he will end in a situation without solutions. Only if he initiates behavioral and attitude changes, his/her efforts and those of their family, friend or professional help, will have a successful otucome. Only then, the alcoholic can start working on his problem, focusing on the alcohol addiction cause actors.

  • Hereditary causes
  • Alcoholism is not a hereditary condition. However, all those that have a family history of alcohol problems should be as cautious to alcohol consumption as a hereditary diabetic is to sugar.

    Alcoholism is not inherited like the blue color of the eyes, physical features or other hereditary medical conditions. However, it is also known that some families has more members alcoholics than others.
    According to an American study, children of alcoholic families have a four time the risk to become addicted to alcohol than children from non-alcholic families. Each person reacts different to alcohol. Alcohol tolerance seems to be inherited (statement proved by studies conducted on twins belonging to different rases.)

    We also can talk about so called social inheritance (unconscious learning patterns). Childrens from alcoholic families are exposed to some experiences that they consider being normal. An outside person can think that thess experiences would not affect the child development. The reality is different.

    Several researches suggest that, in general, the alcoholic suns are more tolerant to alcohol consumption than other boys, before they experience significant effects or behavioral modifications. Also, alcoholics come from families where the mothers experienced long periods of depression.

    According to a study, American researchers claimed that adults that have alcoholic parents are different than adults with non-alcoholic parents. This difference is emphasised by the following characteristics:

    • They don't know what means an anormal behavior, and they guide themselves after other's behavior;
    • They face the difficulty of following a plan from the start to the end;
    • They lie even if is lot simple to say the truth;
    • They critically judge themselves;
    • Have a hard time to relax (when things go well for a while they start to become anxious;
    • They take themself very serious;
    • They experience difficulties in their personal relationships (the fear to be abandoned);
    • They become over excited when face environmental modifications, expecialy when they cannot control them;
    • Constantly, seek for exterior recognition;
    • They consider themselves different from the others;
    • They are either extremly conscientious or display a lack of responsibility;
    • They are extremly faithful and loyal, even when their loyality is not deserved;
    • They are impulsive. They tend to get stocked in actions, without a previous analyze of the alternatives and consequences.

    This does not mean that all children with alcoholic parents will become alcohol addicted too.

  • Body causes
  • There are no body factors that cause alcohol addiction. There is also no allergy that cause alcoholism, when the body comes in contact with a small amount of alcohol.

    In more danger are those persons that react positive to the alcohol effects without experiencing unpleasant follow-ups.

    Several researches suggest that those individuals that have a decreased amount of endorphin (a substance similar with morphine that influences the mood) synthesized by the body, react positive to alcohol and they appreciate it more.

    An increased alcohol consumption for long period of time affects the normal function of the liver. the liver starts to process the alcohol throught an additional catabolism mechanism called microzonale ethanol oxidation system. This additional mecahism overtakes more than two thierds of the alcohol amount. That's the reason why alcoholics can handle a higher amount of alcohol than normal people. However, this addictional catabolism mechanism still functions after long abstinent periods, causing the craving sensation that each sober alcoholic experiences. Due to this mechanism, alcoholics cannot return to a normal alcohol consumption.

    Another explanation offered recently by researches is that during the alcohol metabolism phase, are released some substances called condensation products at the brain level. These substances along with acetaldehyde, adrenaline, or dopamine, work over the same receptors like opiates. The brain areas where this substances operate are responsible with the mood control and the psychological comfort state - another important element that explains themeaning of the feelings during the alcohol addiction onset process.

    A chronic, abusive alcohol consumption reduces up to 50% the endorphins concentration essential for an invigorating general health state.
